Guy was fighting for his life. They'd found a maze of narrow, secondary tunnels that led deeper into the underground city. They heard voices and skirted around the source until they were behind the enemy. He’d had confidence in the plan, and if it had worked, they'd have come up behind al-Atassi and his men, taking most of them down before they realized they were there. Problem was, it didn't work. They were creeping along a narrow shaft, and the voices became louder. Guy paused and glanced at Vince who was behind him.
"Around the next corner. We'll come out in a rush and hit them hard. On my order."
"Copy that."
They listened to the voices a little longer. They were arguing amongst themselves, and when the noise crescendoed, he snapped, "Now!"
They rushed around the corner, but a second before they saw the enemy, the shooting started from further inside the city. The enemy looked up, alerted by the shooting, and saw Guy's squad appear. They dived behind cover as the NATO men opened fire with long bursts from their assault rifles. Guy took several hits on his vest as he estimated the strength of the opposition. He came to a rapid conclusion. There were too many of them. "Back, move back. Get behind cover."
They retreated the way they'd come and ran into more trouble. Men came from behind, and for a short time, they were sandwiched between two groups of hostiles. He glimpsed a narrow opening in the rock, just wide enough for a man to squeeze through, and he ran to check it out. It continued for several meters and then turned a corner, so he couldn't see further. Maybe it went somewhere, maybe it petered out, but it was that or nothing. He crawled back, and they were blazing away at the encroaching hostiles, desperate to keep them back.
“There’s a side tunnel. We have to get into cover. If we stay here, they’ll cut us to pieces. Fall back. I’ll cover you. Soon as you’re hunkered down, I’ll follow.”
He was running low on ammo, and he switched to single shot mode to snipe at the enemy. A volley of shots from behind, firing over his head, announced it was time to go. He edged backward, firing the occasional round when a movement attracted his attention. His retreat took him into the narrow shaft, and he skirted the corner to be out of the direct line of enemy fire.
Gaudin looked at him, as if he wanted to say something.
“What?”
“The tunnel narrows a few meters in, and then it ends in a kind of storeroom. No exit.”
“You’re sure?”
“As certain as the coffin lid closing.”
Welland thought for a moment and shook his head. “Nothing is that certain. Not as long as we’re living, breathing, and we’ve got bullets to shoot at them.”
Vince grimaced. “You’re right, except for the obvious. There’s no way we can get out of here. The moment we try, we’ll emerge into a storm of gunfire.”
“You’re forgetting something.
